Verona to taste...
Why this itinerary? Because we think it is necessary to taste our regional specialties, so you can better understand the nature of the people who lives in Verona.
Our cuisine is a genuine and savoury one. In the local restaurants and taverns you can find our first dishes such as PAPARELE or BIGOLI (noodles with chicken liver or with hare-sauce); RISI E BISI (soup with peas) and PASTA E FASOI (noodles with beans). You can taste also RISOTTO AL RADICCHIO or RISOTTO AL TASTASAL (with spicy pork sausage).
Verona is also the birthplace of GNOCCHI (potato dumplings served with butter and Parmesan).
Between second dishes we have PASTISSADA DE CAVAL (equine dish) and STRACOTTO ALL'AMARONE.
In Verona there is a sauce called PEARA' that we use with boiled meat. Its origin is very old. The legend says it was created for Rosmunda after she drunk in his father's skull.
It is prepared with bread, beef marrow and pepper.
During your visiting don't forget to have a snack with a sandwich with SOPRESSA accompanied by a glass of wine such as Soave, Bardolino or Valpolicella. Sopressa is a typical cold cut, with or without garlic. Usually you'll find it together with "polenta".
But our most famous product is PANDORO. You can buy it during Christmas time. It is prepared with simple ingredients and put overturned into the oven, into a starred mould.
Another Christmas cake is NADALINO; as pandoro, it is star featured and with a coating of sugar.
But if you like to bring a souvenir to your friends you can buy our special pastry BACI DI GIULIETTA. It means Juliet's kisses, because is composed by two almond biscuits pressed together with bitter chocolate.
These are our typical dishes.
For any additional information you need about restaurants or confectioner's shop you can ask to our reception.
